Natural Gas Safety Tips

  • Keep all natural gas appliances clean and vented properly.
  • Never cover fresh air vents that supply air to your appliances.
  • Do not store any flammable materials in or near natural gas appliances.
  • Never leave any food unattended while it's cooking.
  • Keep the area around your furnace or water heater clear.
  • Never use your oven or stove-top to heat your apartment or dry your clothes.
Appliance Safety

All appliances should be installed and repaired only by qualified technicians. Improper ventilation can starve the combustion process in the appliance and create a situation that could produce toxic carbon monoxide gas. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that, in sufficient amounts, maybe deadly to humans. Usually, headaches and / or flu-like symptoms are initial signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you suspect that any of your appliances have been improperly vented, you should discontinue using them and contact Beyond The Meter immediately for an inspection.

An appliance gas control is a precision mechanism that may malfunction if it is exposed to water from flooding, storms, or any other damaging enviroments. A flooded gas control must be replaced by a qualified gas appliance technician. Damaged gas control valves must be replaced.

Natural Gas Appliances Connections

Keep your home safe by having Beyond The Meter check your natural gas connections to your appliances every year. If you have uncoated brass connectors made more than 25 years ago, have our company replace them immediately with newer, stainless steel connectors. The older connectors could crack and cause a natural gas leak.

You may need to check these natural gas appliances:

  • Furnace
  • Stove
  • Water heater
  • Clothes dryer
  • Outdoor grill
Important: Because the connectors are sensitive, be sure that these inspections are done by a qualified gas technician. Do not attemp to move appliances or check connectors yourself.
